Vinyl Art

There are very few things I get all sorts of giddy about. The Top 5 giddy factors probably include music; chocolate; thoughts of my Mustang; dry, sarcastic comedy; and then music again.

So when I came across Daniel Edlen's vinyl art, I was understandably... giddy.

Daniel paints musician's portraits on vinyl records/albums with acrylic paint. It's something, I think, is so very unique, so creative, and so perfect for my new office.

So Daniel and I chatted via Twitter, some email, some blog comments and I ended up commissioning 3 pieces from him.

My 3-piece jazz set is themed in blue. He'll soon be shipping me Thelonious Monk's "Monk's Blues," Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue," and John Coltrane's "Blue Train." And we figured since all three albums include the word "blue" in the title, that the pieces should also be painted in blue.

So Daniel first painted them in a white acrylic, and tinted over with a vibrant blue color. You can see a frame-by-frame demonstration of his process by clicking here.

So until I've received them, and quickly run up to the office to hang them, here's a preview of the three pieces before framing, before hanging, before bragging some more...

And if you like them like I love them, go to Daniel's site and check-out some of his other pieces. And then buy some for you, and then buy some more for me.

I think our last 2 or 3 pieces should be here and up on the walls in the next week or so. Then we'll have to have the 4 of you over to have the grand reveal!

Those look awesome! You should check out artist Dario Robleto (read this short interview with how pop music is literally used in his sculptures; http://pitchfork.com/news/36087-take-cover-yo-la-tengos-ipopular-songsi/)
I might have to have a piece commissioned

that sculpture is very cool.. reminds me of iri5 -- who uses cassette tapes on canvas to create portraits -- though i could never afford one of her pieces... http://www.iri5.com/
